WHY WE THINK IT'S COOL: every two years the Concrete Institute of Australia holds the Awards for Excellence in Concrete — a prestigious event that celebrates the promotion and development of excellence in concrete research, technology, application, design and construction across the country. Following the success of our involvement with the 2015 awards supplement, CIA came to us again asking for us to design the 2017 supplement that was broken into 6 categories: Residential Buildings, Commercial Buildings, Infrastructure Projects, Technology Projects, Sustainability & Environment and Repairs & Rehabilitation. We were provided with some brilliant high resolution images which helped to really bring the supplement to life to achieve a visually impressive final product. Having also designed the logo for the event, we ensured that the overall layout and design was kept in line with the brand by using the same colours and fonts, while also incorporating complimentary colours and fonts where necessary to add bursts of contrast and interest. An exciting project to work on, the final supplement looked great and was a lovely keepsake for all of those who attended. We look forward to designing the 2019 supplement!

WHY WE THINK IT'S COOL: we are now in our 2nd year of designing and publishing Concrete in Australia — a quarterly publication consisting of news, events, features and technical papers throughout the concrete industry — and we love working on it every quarter. The magazine has become an established addition in Popdot Publishing and it is always great to work on a variety of different features and articles that continuously lend themselves differently to the style of design and layout. Alongside the standard articles that appear in each issue, the September issue included some one-off features, most notably a feature that celebrated the Awards for Excellence in Concrete winners. We always enjoy developing our approach to the design of this publication and it is great to have the freedom to personalise features wherever possible to give them a unique lease of life, ensuring every issue of CIA is exciting and forward moving.

WHY WE THINK IT'S COOL: new company ID8 Design came to us wanting a logo that resonated professionalism with a personality. The client was a big fan of geometric patterns and was keen to see these incorporated in his visual identity. He also wanted the company tagline Design, Develop, Create included in the logo. Keeping the design simple and using a sans serif font, it enabled us to create a striking brand that confidently appeals to his audience. The bold blue used as the primary colour of his brand enhances the contemporary look and feel of the company which was important when wanting to appeal to an audience where design and a flair for all things creative is paramount. Once the logo had been finalised, this was then added to the company's business cards which again were kept simple, yet striking. Different tones of the primary blue were used to provide additional visual contrast and small illustrative elements were added that help to enhance the nature of the business.
